Series, Specials, & Movies Information: classic

The first series of Sailor Moon, often called "classic" by fans, debuted on March 7th, 1992 and concluded February 27th of the following year. It was the longest of the five series, consisting of 46 episodes total. This series had two separate versions of the opening, both set to the song "Moonlight Densetsu" (DALI version) and also included two different ending animations, one with "Heart Moving" by Misae Takamatsu and the other "Princess Moon" by Ushio Hashimoto.

This story arc's initial success is what solidified Sailor Moon's future, as it was originally intended to conclude at just 46 episodes. Because of the show's explosive popularity, it went on to be renewed for "Sailor Moon R" and the rest is history.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon was originally based upon the Dark Kingdom arc (Acts 01 - 13) of the manga. The live action series was based on elements from this series and the manga. The classic storyline and characters have also been re-imagined in more than ten musicals.

One day crybaby Usagi Tsukino stumbles upon a cat with a crescent moon on her forehead. This cat, named Luna, has the ability to speak and tells Usagi it is her destiny to fight as the soldier of love and justice, Sailor Moon. It is her mission to find and protect the Moon Princess alongside her allies. Usagi's adventures as Sailor Moon pit her against the Dark Kingdom, a group initially trying to steal energy from humans, but later bent on capturing the Phantom Silver Crystal. The Dark Kingdom's leaders, Queen Beryl and Queen Metaria, order The Four Heavenly Kings to terrorize Tokyo with their monsters in hopes of locating the Silver Crystal.

One by one, the other four Sailor Soldiers (Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus) join Sailor Moon. Tuxedo Mask also appears, a mysterious man who aids the Sailor Soldiers in battle. It is later discovered that Tuxedo Mask is actually Mamoru Chiba, the reincarnation of the Prince of Earth, Endymion. Just as the Sailor Team finally comes together, it is revealed that Usagi is the Moon Princess, and the Silver Crystal appears. Mamoru is then taken and brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom. He assumes the identity of Endymion of the Dark Kingdom and fights the Sailor Team over possession of the Silver Crystal.

During the last stand against the Dark Kingdom, Sailor Moon must face the enemy alone. She successfully heals Endymion, and battles Queen Metaria as Princess Serenity. She dies wishing that she and her friends could start over, and live normal lives. The Silver Crystal ulitmately grants her wish, but they are reborn with no memory of their friendship or past as Sailor Soldiers.
